CarbonX – Major Project

This project investigated the problems associated with indoor air pollution and the limitations of existing consumer air purifiers. Through research and user interviews, it became clear that while current devices can filter particulates effectively, they are often bulky, energy-intensive, and lack consideration for long-term sustainability. Users also highlighted frustrations around high filter replacement costs, poor usability during maintenance, and doubts about whether the devices truly improve air quality. From a broader perspective, studies show that conventional purifiers contribute to e-waste and have a limited impact on capturing CO₂, a major contributor to climate change.

For my major project, I developed a solution that emphasised both technical performance and sustainable design. Early concepts explored complex multi-stage systems, but prototyping and airflow testing revealed challenges around efficiency and user practicality. Iteration was key, and these insights led to the creation of a modular design that not only filters harmful particles but also integrates a CO₂ scrubbing function, improving indoor air quality while addressing global carbon reduction goals.

The final design, CarbonX, balances usability, sustainability, and performance. Its modular filter system makes replacement straightforward, reduces waste, and allows for future adaptability. The design also incorporates app-based monitoring, enabling users to track air quality and filter life in real time. By merging engineering validation with human-centred testing, CarbonX demonstrates a practical, future-ready approach to healthier indoor environments.

The proposed design features a modular air purification system that enables users to effectively manage both particulate matter and indoor CO₂ levels, enhancing health and comfort. CarbonX transitions from a compact, domestic-friendly unit into an extended high-capacity configuration by adding modular filter cartridges, allowing adaptability for different room sizes and pollution levels. The system delivers a clean airflow rate of up to 380 m³/h, achieving effective purification in under 10 minutes for medium-sized rooms, while remaining quiet enough for everyday use.

The core body is constructed from lightweight, recyclable ABS polymer using injection moulding to ensure manufacturability and durability, while the modular filter housings incorporate standardised activated carbon and HEPA elements for sustainability and easy replacement. The sealing system uses silicone gaskets to maintain airtight performance, while the outer shell is finished with a scratch-resistant matte coating for long-term durability, easy cleaning, and aesthetic integration into home environments.
