I focus on accessibility in digital communication, designing inclusive WeChat experiences for illiterate elderly users. My goal is to reduce barriers, enhance connection with family, and promote compassionate interaction design.

As technology advances, the digital divide continues to widen—especially for elderly individuals who are illiterate. While digital tools are meant to enhance communication, they often present barriers for users who cannot read.

This project focuses on redesigning WeChat’s “Care Mode” to better support illiterate elderly users in China. Through research into ageing populations in both China and the UK, it became clear that many elderly individuals—particularly in rural China—struggle to use smartphones independently due to literacy challenges.

Inspired by personal experience with my grandmother, this project reimagines a simplified, voice-assisted, and icon-based version of WeChat. The goal is to help elderly users initiate video calls and perform essential tasks confidently and independently, without relying on text.
